Urban areas bring unique challenges and benefits to landscaping.

Urban areas are known for large amounts of concrete—not dirt!  This creates issues with water runoff, no matter where you are, and when done incorrectly hardscaping can only add to the problems.  You need a company that knows hardscaping like the back of their hands—such as Theme Designs Studios.  Hailing from Houston, Texas, Theme Designs Studios knows, intimately, the issues that hardscapes can sire.  We design hardscapes that can elequently deal with the monsoon-like Texas springs and the late summer hurricanes while retaining artistic beauty and functionality.

A hardscape for La Griglia in Houston, Texas included patio tiling, a retaining wall, and a custom fence beside their landscaping.
What are hardscapes?  The term "hardscape" applies to any permanent landscaping structure, usually constructed from concrete, brick, granite, or other solid, hard material.  Some of these can be porous, so as to allow for water absorbtion and slow down water run off, but many are not.  Thus hardscapes can add to water displacement, and your perfect patio might just turn your neighbor's into a cess pool!

It isn't just pathways that this applies to, though!  Hardscapes also include features such as:

  • retainment walls
  • garden borders
  • fencing
  • fire pits
  • water fountains
  • architectural structures like arbors
  • many other permanent features you may want to include in your landscaping.

Successful hardscapes take into account the lay of the land around the hardscape area, not just what is being directly built upon.  They are designed to best control the water in the event of the most disasterous of situations; designing areas for the water to run smoothly into land that can best handle the overflow from non-absorbent places.  In this way, your hardscape will not only look beautiful, but will also be environmentally conscious.
